Looking Back at the Golden Age of Mixtapes [Patreon Preview]
This is a preview. If you would like to read this post in its entirety, please subscribe to my Patreon.
This month’s Patreon post is coming at you a little earlier than usual, in part because I’m taking next week off the newsletter (I’m visiting my parents, which as I’m sure you’ll all gather, can take a lot out of me), and in part because next month I’ll be doing another installment of VHS POISONING (be afraid, be very afraid!) and so it seemed like the perfect time to sneak in a little nostalgia between two recurring series. (By the way, thank you all for the warm response to the Metal Classics posts— it was both very encouraging and heartening, and I look forward to doing more posts of that nature in the future!)
In any case, the topic for this month’s post comes from Ben, who is probably my longest-tenured $10 patron, and so his input is not taken lightly. Initially he wanted me to do a retrospective on DatPiff, and the more I thought about it, the more I realized the entire late-00s/early-10s atmosphere brought about some of the best and most important mixtapes in the history of hip-hop, and signaled a huge sea change not just in the music industry but in how we engaged with music from the ground up…
Thank you so much for reading. Please don’t forget to hit that subscribe button on my Patreon if you want the rest of this post and access to my backlog.
